Plot Highlights

Part 1: Walrus Pups

  • Captain Barnacles is with his niece and nephew, Ursa and Orson, and they’re working on collecting Sea Scout badges. Captain Barnacles recalls how he was never able to get his Walrus Rescue badge because each time he tried to help a walrus, another walrus showed up and shooed him away.
  • The two young polar bears are about to attempt another badge, but they hear yelping and follow the sound. They find three walrus pups who can’t find their moms and are very hungry. Their moms told them to stay on that ice float, but when an iceberg hits it and they start to move, they worry that their moms won’t find them.
  • Captain Barnacles calls the Octonauts to help, and they head out in their submarine, the GUP-S, to rescue the group from the ice float.
  • Two more icebergs crash into their ice float, and the walrus pups appear scared as the icebergs start to close in on them from all sides. The Octonauts arrive and drill through the ice in the nick of time, and the group is rescued in the submarine.
  • Once safely aboard the ship and fed with walrus pup formula, the group locates the walrus moms who are worried and looking for their pups. Captain Barnacles reunites the pups with their moms, and he finally earns his Walrus Rescue badge after all.

Part 2: Mantis Shrimp

  • Kwazii reads some of the other Octonauts a story about two mantis shrimp that are locked in a battle of claws. One day, the two shrimp discovered some baby worms that they didn’t want to hurt, so they drew a line in the sand and agreed to stay on their respective sides to stop their fighting.
  • The Octopod is headed to a coral reef, and the group wonders if they’ll get the see the mantis shrimp in action. When they arrive, they unknowingly park the Octopod in the middle of the line that the two mantis shrimp have drawn, and each of the shrimp uses a claw to claw through ship’s exterior and climb in.
  • Meanwhile, the Octonauts swim around the reef and find three hermit crabs who have outgrown their shells and can’t find new ones. They bring the crabs aboard the Octopod to get them new shells.
  • Back on the Octopod, the group watches as the two mantis shrimp find each other and begin to fight over their “new home.” Captain Barnacles is concerned that they might hurt each other and tries to stop their fighting, but the two shrimp continue to battle. Captain Barnacles separates them and places them in separate water tanks, and he encourages them to take some time to calm down.
  • The two shrimp call out to one another from their tanks and become competitive over who can calm down the fastest. Soon, this argument escalates and they bust out of their tanks to start fighting again. They move around the Octopod as they battle, and the Octonauts try to stop them before they hurt one another.
  • The shrimp make their way into the control room of the Octopod and one of them accidentally hits the octo-alert. The Octonauts rush into the room as the shrimp start fighting on the controls, leading the Octopod to drive around erratically. Just as the ship is about to hit the coral reef and destroy so many creatures’ homes, Captain Barnacles takes control of the steering and stops it.
  • When they realize they almost destroyed the home of themselves and so many other creatures, the mantis shrimps acknowledge that their fighting went on too long, and they apologize. In the end, they work together with their claws to free the hermit crabs of their too-small shells.
