Captain Barnacles

The leader of the Octonauts, Captain Barnacles helps direct the Octonauts as they work together to rescue fish from the trees in the first part of the episode and find Shellington when he’s lost in the second part of the episode.

Shellington

In the second part of the episode, Shellington feels disappointed when they don’t find any creatures in the under-ice lake. When a microbe in his water sample gets his attention in the night, he becomes excited and returns to the lake without telling the others, but he gets lost in the dark lake and needs to be rescued.

Plot Highlights

Part 1: Poison Dart Frogs

  • The Octonauts spot a tidal bore, or a large wave, moving up the Amazon river. Worried that creatures might get hurt or thrown onto shore, they head to the river to help.
  • When they get to the river, they find some Amazon dart frogs calling out to them from a tree. The Octonauts meet Robert Robert, a poison dart frog who tells them about their bright and poisonous skin.
  • The poison dart frogs tell them that fish have been thrown into their tree’s puddles. They need to hurry and get the fish out because the frogs’ eggs are about to hatch into tadpoles that need those puddles to swim in.
  • Captain Barnacles calls the rest of the Octonauts at HQ and tells them about the problem. Turnip flies the GUP-H, a new helicopter they’ve built, to rescue some of the fish from the tall tree.
  • The group works together to rescue the fish, and the frogs transport their tadpoles to the puddles as they hatch.
  • When Robert Robert slips and nearly falls off the tree, Quazi catches him in a bucket while hanging from the helicopter and safely carries him and his tadpole to a puddle.

Part 2: Hidden Lake

  • The Octonauts are in Antarctica, and they see a frozen waterfall made of red ice. Curious to learn what’s under the thick ice, they use the drill on their GUP-S submarine to dig a tunnel through the ice.
  • The Octonauts swim around and explore the lake beneath the ice, which is red because it contains rusty iron. Shellington is discouraged that creatures wouldn’t be able to live in the cold and dark water, and he appears upset when they return to the GUP-S without finding any creatures.
  • The rest of the Octonauts go to sleep, but Shellington stays awake and investigates a sample of water that he got from the lake. A voice calls out to him, and he meets a tiny microbe that had been living in the water. The microbe asks him to return him to the lake because the GUP-S is too warm and bright for him to live.
  • Shellington heads back into the lake, and the microbe leads him to his home to introduce him to the other microbes. The microbes explain that they can live in the lake because they get energy from the rust in the water.
  • Shellington realizes that he doesn’t know how to find his way back, and he makes a “mayday” call back to the ship. Captain Barnacles and Quazi come find him in the lake, and the group escapes back onto the surface just before the ice opening freezes over.

Discussion Questions

In the first part of the episode, the Octonauts must work together to rescue the fish from the tree. You may want to discuss teamwork with your child, and consider using some of the following questions to get you started.

  • How did the Octonauts rescue the fish from the tree? How do you think working together helped them get this done?
  • Can you think of a time when you worked with others? What did you do together?

In the second part of the episode, Quazi appears disappointed when he doesn’t find creatures in the lake, then gets in a dangerous situation when he goes back into the lake without the other Octonauts. We encourage you to discuss feeling disappointed and making smart decisions with your child after they watch this episode.

  • How did Shellington feel when they didn’t find any creatures in the lake? Have you ever felt this way?
  • What happened when Shellington went back into the lake with the microbe? Do you think he made a smart decision to go back into the lake? What do you think he could have done instead?
